Fortitude Valley motorists will need to rethink their usual route across the Brisbane River this summer, with the Story Bridge set to close to road traffic for three weeks during major maintenance works.

The closure will begin at 1am on Sunday, 27 December 2026, and continue until 5am on Monday, 18 January 2027. Brisbane City will use the period to carry out resurfacing, waterproofing and structural maintenance, while the eastern footpath will remain open for pedestrians, cyclists, and scooter riders.
Major Works Planned For The Bridge
The work will cover the southern approach of the Story Bridge in Kangaroo Point, as well as sections of the Bradfield Highway on both sides of the river. The works will include structural deck maintenance, waterproofing and resurfacing. Expansion joints on the main bridge span will also undergo maintenance, with crews expected to work around the clock where weather and construction conditions allow.
BCC has scheduled the closure across the December and January holiday period, when traffic demand is typically lower. The timing is intended to minimise disruption while the work is carried out.
The Story Bridge carries about 100,000 vehicles each day, making it a major transport link between Fortitude Valley, Kangaroo Point and other parts of Brisbane.
How Will Valley Travellers Be Affected?
Drivers who normally use the Story Bridge will need to use alternative river crossings while the bridge is closed. The most suitable route will depend on each traveller’s destination, while navigation apps can help motorists choose an alternative crossing.
BCC expects delays during the closure and is advising drivers to plan their journeys ahead of time and check traffic information before setting out. Public transport users are also advised to check Translink for updated service information during the closure period.
The closure will apply to road traffic, but people travelling through the area on foot, by bicycle or by scooter will still have a way across the river. The eastern footpath will remain open, while the western footpath will temporarily close to support construction activities. Emergency vehicles responding to urgent incidents with lights and sirens will continue to have access across the bridge.
Maintenance Ahead Of Major Renewal
The three-week project is part of the ongoing maintenance of the heritage-listed Story Bridge and is separate from Brisbane’s broader plans to renew the ageing structure.
BCC said its longer-term renewal program is being developed using a detailed business case and specialist engineering advice. Proposed works include repairs to steel and concrete, replacement of ageing components, improvements to bridge access and upgrades to essential services.

The current timeline lists minor renewal works as commencing in early 2027, while major renewal works are scheduled to begin from late 2027 and beyond, subject to funding availability.
The Story Bridge is scheduled to reopen to road traffic at 5am on Monday, 18 January 2027. Until then, Fortitude Valley residents, workers and visitors who normally use the bridge will need to factor the temporary closure into their travel plans.
