Parrotfishes are a group of about 95 species. hey are found in relatively shallow tropical and subtropical oceans throughout the world, displaying their largest species richness in the Indo-Pacific. They are found in coral reefs, rocky coasts, and seagrass beds, and play a significant role in bioerosion.

H.F. [Frank] Olsen of Oxley, Brisbane, was commissioned between 1970-1983 as an illustrator by the Department of Harbours and Marine in order to provide a wide range of illustrations of Queensland fishes.

T C Marshall was the Government Ichthyologist at that time and had an active involvement in government publications regarding the identification of Queensland fishes.
