The Cloncurry River stretches 900km from Mount Boorama to the Flinders River near Wondoola. It was named by by the explorer Robert O’Hara Burke in 1861 after Lady Cloncurry. The town takes its name from the river.

Cloncurry War Memorial was unveiled by the Governor-General, Lord Stonehaven, in 1927. The clocks have since been replaced by metal discs commemorating the Navy, Air Force, Australian Army and Nursing.
