The first Surat hospital opened in a cottage in 1911. New buildings were opened in 1928 and expanded in 1961.

The Thargomindah Hospital was built in 1888 from local mud bricks. The building was expanded in 1942. It was replaced by the new hospital in 1976 and used as residential flats. In 2006 it became the Bulloo Shire Council’s Tourism Office.

The original photograph caption makes reference to National Fitness Camp.

The first National Fitness Camp was held at Currumbin in August 1943. After World War 2 it moved to a new site on Taliebudgera Creek and was held annually during the summer. The site was renamed the Tallebudgera Recreation Camp in the 1980s.
