Government House, Brisbane, 1898

Johann Heussler, a wealthy Brisbane merchant purchases 22 acres of land from the Government in 1862 and made plans to build a house there. Local architect Benjamin Backhouse designed a house in 1865, to be constructed from stone excavated on site combined with a cement and lime mixture.

The Heussler family lived at Fernberg from 1865 until 1872 when the high cost of upkeep forces foreclosure on the property by the mortgagee.

Sir Arthur Palmer, Premier of Queensland (1870-1874), and later Lieutenant Governor resided in Fernberg from 1872 to 1881.

John Stevenson MP purchased Fernberg and commissioned the addition of a fine frontage to the building and considerably extended the grounds by purchasing adjacent land. He also installed the stained glass window depicting Robert the Bruce, King of Scotland (1306-1329) on the main internal stairway of the house.

The title to Fernberg was transferred in 1894 to Stevenson’s mortgagees,

Coded telegram to the Governor of Queensland showing that war has broken out between Great Britain and Germany, Austria and Hungary, 13 August 1914

A week after receiving this telegram, Queensland took the extraordinary step of a issuing a proclamation independent of the Commonwealth that war had broken out. The proclamation was issued by Sir Arthur Morgan, Lieutenant-Governor, the President of the Legislative Council and Vice-Admiral of the State of Queensland.

Aerial view Burdekin Bridge under construction, c 1955

The Burdekin Bridge is 1,097 metres (3,600 ft) long, only 46 metres shorter than the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Construction commenced in 1947 and took 10 years to complete. IN 2010 it was recognised as a National Engineering Heritage Landmark.

THE GOVERNOR’S GUARD

The interest of the Governor (Sir Leslie Wilson) in his old regiment – the Royal Marines – was shown yesterday, when the Marines from H.M.S. Sussex provided the guard of honour at the Exhibition on the occasion of the official opening. Immediately he descended from the Vice-Regal car Sir Leslie made his way to the officer of the guard, shook hands warmly, and congratulated him on the appearance of the men. Subsequently he walked between the ranks and, noticing a string of medals on one member of the party, conversed with him for a few seconds. He also addressed the guard, and said he appreciated very highly the compliment paid to him by providing a guard of honour from the regiment with which h. was so proud to have been associated for so many years. One of the outstanding features of the annual shows of the Royal National Association is the court of the Department of Agriculture and Stock. The comprehensive and educative collections of exhibits displayed in this court of the big show constitute quite an exhibition in themselves. Indeed, to the man already on the land as well as to anyone contemplating such a life, this is the most educative of all of the soil product sections.

Tlho court of the Department of Agriculture and Stock is located us on previous occasions In the Exhibition annexes. The standard of excellence reached In the preparation and In the staging of. tho exhibits reflects very great credit on the officers responsible for the display.
