Letter from Marjorie Stapleton of "The Australian Women's Weekly" to the Commissioner of Police requesting police press passes for herself, the assistant reporter and the photographer for the forthcoming visit of the Beatles to Brisbane

Queensland Police were responsible for issuing press passes for major events. The Beatles were the biggest story around in 1964 and many media outlets wanted to cover the story. Many magazines and small regional newspapers sent reporters to Brisbane to cover the concerts held there on 29 and 30 June.

Wreck of the Young Australia

MESSRS J. AND G. Harris received a telegram from Cape Moreton yesterday, to tho effect that the ship Young Australia had gone ashore and that all the passengers had been landed on Moreton Island, and were badly off for provisions and other necessaries. Messrs Harris, on receipt of the news, at once dispatched the Francis Cadell, s., to the scene of the wreck, with an ample supply of necessaries of all kinds.

We telegraphed to Superintendent Brayden, at Cape Moreton, for further particulars, and at half past 6 o’clock last night received the following reply –

Cape Moleton, May 31
The Young Australia is on shore on the north point of the island. She went ashore about 11 o’clock this morning. All the passengers and crew are on shore at the North Point. The vessel is breaking up, and it

Orchids in the Botanic Gardens

There are at present on view in the small showhouse, off the large bushhouse, in the Gardens, a few beautiful orchids, though the specimens, being young, are individually small. They comprise Dendrobium formosum, white with orange throat; Dendrobium suavisaimum, rich yellow, very fragrant; Vanda tricolor, two varieties, light yellow spotted with red, very fragrant; Cattleya Harrisoniae, rose colour, Phalaenopsis grandiflora.

View of Gateway Bridge during opening, 11 January 1986

The Gateway Bridge was opened to the public on 11 January 1986 when around 200,000 people walked over it. The bridge was open to cars the following day.

It was officially opened by the Duke of Edinburgh on 14 May 1986, and since it had been carrying cars for four months he declared it “more open than usual”.
