Central Station was constructed as the inner city link of the Queensland railway network, operational from 18 August 1889. The first Station building at Central was of timber and corrugated iron with pitched roof and segmental barrel vaulted roof over the platform serving Roma Street. Construction of a permanent building commenced in 1899 and it was opened in 1901.

Inala, c 1957

The tiny township of Serviceton was selected in 1946 by the Serviceton Co-operative Society for development to help meet the shortage of post-war housing. The Society purchased 850 acres of land which was taken over by the Queensland Housing Commission in 1950, to which it added another 200 acres. The area was renamed Inala in 1953 to avoid confusion with the town of Serviceton in South Australia.

Indooroopilly Railway Bridge under construction, 1956

The Indooroopilly Railway Bridge crosses the Brisbane River between Indooroopilly and Chelmer. It was built between the Albert Bridge (right, the originally railway bridge) and the Walter Taylor Bridge (left, the road bridge).

Governor of Queensland Lieutenant General Sir John Lavarack opening the 35th Parliament, Brisbane, 27 August 1957

After serving in both world warrs, Lieutenant General Sir John Lavarack became Governor of Queensland in 1946. He was the first Australian-born governor of Queensland and the second Australian-born person to hold a governorship in Australia.

The 35th Parliament was opened on 27 August 1957 following the election on 3 August..

“Freezer” Ships

Eleven “freezer” ships have been fixed to load meat, dairy produce and other cold store foodstuffs between now and June 30 at Brisbane, Cairns, Townsville, Bowen, Port Alma and Glasttone.

Three of the ships – the Tekoa, Port Townsville and Northumberland – are now loading in Queensland ports.
