Coffee Growing in Queensland.

Mr. Chas. Collins, M.L.A., writes under date 2/10/33, enclosing the fol lowing letter: —

Department of Agriculture and Stock, Brisbane, 29/9/33.

Dear Mr. Collins, —I have to acknowledge receipt of your letter of the 23rd instant, and to thank you for your suggestion regarding trials in coffee growing. The question of tropical, agriculture generally is now the subject of consideration, and in (the event of there being established a Bureau of Tropical Agriculture, attention will be given to the possibilities of producing the various tropical crops in North Queensland, including coffee. We are aware of the work that has been done with coffee by Mr. Charles H. Waye of Proserpine, and
by other persons in the State. A coffee plantation was established some years ago at Buderim Mountain by Mr. P. H. Board who later transferred his activities ‘to New Guinea. I

Sir William Glasgow Memorial, Brisbane, November 1965

The Sir William Glasgow Memorial was designed by Queensland sculptor Daphne Mayo and completed in 1964. It is in the form of a naturalistic bronze figure of Sir William, dressed in Australian Light Horse uniform and set on a granite plinth.

Thomas William Glasgow was born at Blackmount, near Tiaro, Queensland in 1876. He was educated at One Mile State School in Gympie and at Maryborough Grammar School. After leaving school he initially worked as a clerk in the office of a mining company, then as a bank clerk in Gympie. He joined the Wide Bay Regiment, Queensland Mounted Infantry, while still in his teens. In 1897 he was one of 20 chosen to represent Queensland at Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations in London. Ansett-ANA helicopter, Hayman Island, c 1966

Ansett operated helicopters between Proserpine and Hayman Island from 1965 to 1984. This Sikorsky S-61N VH-BRI operated the service in 1965-1968 and 1978-1984, operating the final revenue service from Hayman Island to Proserpine on 21 July 1984.

Gifts for President Lyndon B. Johnson, 22 October 1966

President Lyndon B. Johnson was presented with an Australian stockman’s whip, spurs and bridle. The bridge carries the Queensland badge.

The card reads:

Presented to Lyndon B. Johnson, President of the Unites States of America, by the Government and People of Queensland, Australia on the occasion of his visit, 22nd-23rd October 1966.

Gunboats Gayundah and Paluma, Bundaberg, 1899

HMQS Paluma and HMQS Gayundah were flat-iron gunboats of the Queensland Maritime Defence Force. They entered service in 1884 and passed to the Commonwealth Naval Forces in 1901. This photograph is taken after the 1899 refit when Gayundah carried two QF 12-pounder guns.

Paluma was decommissioned in 1916 and worked as the harbour tender Rip in Melbourne before being scrapped in 1950.

Gayundah was decommissioned in 1921 and served as sand and gravel barge in Brisbane. In 1958 she was sold to Redcliffe Town Council and beached as a breakwater at Woody Point.

J D Story Administration Building, University of Queensland, St Lucia, Occtober 1966

J D Story Administration Building was designed by University of Queensland Staff Architect James Birrell. It is named after John Douglas Story, a prominent Queensland public servant who worked for the establishment of the University.
