Sir Alan Mansfield was Lieutenant-Governor of Queensland on several occasions during his time as Chief Justice. He was appointed Governor in 1966 and retired in 1972. The suburb of Mansfield in south east Brisbane is named after him.

First public traffic on the Captain Cook Bridge, Brisbane, 13 December 1972

Construction of the Captain Cook Bridge commenced in 1968 and was completed in 1972. The main span of 183 metres was the precast prestressed concrete free-cantilever bridge for 3 months until it was overtaken by the Harada Bridge in Japan.

Central railway station, Brisbane, c 1976

Central Station was constructed as the inner city link of the Queensland railway network, operational from 18 August 1889. The first Station building at Central was of timber and corrugated iron with pitched roof and segmental barrel vaulted roof over the platform serving Roma Street. On 12 May 1899, a contract was let for a permanent building. It is thought that the initial design was conceived in the architectural section of the Railway Department’s Chief Engineer’s Office, however the architect is unknown. The additions of the clock tower and awning were designed by former Colonial Architect, J J Clark. The initial complex comprised two through tracks and a dock with two tracks on either side. State Emergency Service headquarters, Fortitude Valley, c 1976

The Queensland State Emergency Service was founded in 1975. It evolved from the Queensland Civil Defence Organisation which was set up in 1961 to deal with emergencies in the event of a nuclear war. The Civil Defence Organisation was activated in November 1973 following the Brisbane tornado and during the 1974 floods. The Queensland State Emergency Service was established because there was a need for a service that was capable of dealing with natural disasters..

When formed in 1976, the state headquarters was at the former Fortitude Valley Girls and Infants School.

MV Melbidir, Brisbane River, 1973

The MV Melbidir was a Queensland Government passenger and cargo vessel built in 1973 to transport passengers and cargo from Thursday Island to the outer Torres Strait Islands. She could carry 157 tons general cargo and 11 tons refrigerated cargo. This was the fourth vessel named Melbidir operated by the Queensland Government to serve the Torres Strait Islands and Northern Peninsula Area. She was sold in 1988 to the Falkland Islands Government and renamed Southern Star.
