Lamington National Park Tracks

One of the most discussed subjects in pre-war years was that of access roads to Lamington National Park and whether Beaudesert should have priority for a service run, or whether Canungra should have the run through to the Park.

The purchase by the Main Roads Commission of Lahey’s Road at Cainbabel dampened the spirits of Beaudesert, but local enthusiasm for hiking, or interest in the National Park, practically ceased during the war years.

However, it appears one body, the Beaudesert National Fitness Committee, has taken up the initiative, and we hope other organisations will follow suit. The interest in park tours by the Beaudesert Club is to be admired.

Quite a lot of information can be gathered in the way of botany study and zoology, while the camping tours and hikes are healthy recreations.

Up until 10 December 1859, the colony of New South Wales extended as far north as Cape York Peninsula. In 1859, the new colony of Queensland acquired over 5000 kilometres of coastline which had few safety features in place, and became responsible for all navigation lights and harbours along this coastline. At the time the only lighthouse which existed had been built at Cape Moreton [600257] by the New South Wales Government in 1857.

By 1862, the Queensland government had appointed a Portmaster, Commander George Poynter Heath and had passed the Marine Board Act 1862. In the two years following, due to a lack of funds to spend on marine safety, activity concentrated on dealing with pilots and harbour lights, The issue of coastal lights was not taken up until 25 May

POMONA.

Fruit Loadings.—During October 142 tons of bananas were sent from the Pomona district to Brisbane and Southern markets, as compared with 119 tons in September, and 128 tons in October, 1932. The loadings of sugar cane have also increased.

BEERBURRUM.

Pineapple Crop.-The pineapple growers of the Beerburrum district have completed the harvesting of their winter crop of pineapples, amounting to 15,000 cases.

Tobacco Settlement.-Mr. L. Woods has taken control of the Beerburrum tobacco settlement from Mr. J. M’Aulay, who was transferred to Burleigh. The settlement at present is receiving too much rain.

Tiger Moth plane used for for aerial sowing, November 1963

A de Havilland DH.82 Tiger Moth owned by Brown Williams Aviation Ltd was used for aerial seed sowing of the Fitzroy Basin scheme in the early 1960s.

This aircraft started life in the Royal Australian Air Force in 1942. It still flies today with the Royal Aero Club of Western Australia.
