R.N.A. Pasture Contest

The R.N.A. Council yesterday formed a special committee of graziers and pasture experts to plan Queensland’s first improved pasture field competitions, which it is hoped to conduct during the coming show season.

The Committee comprises: Messrs. F. J. Morgan (vice-president), R. M. Reynolds (Naranga, Oakey), W. J. D. Shaw (Rodds Bay, via Gladstone), J. Sparkes (Lyndley, Dalby), M. D. Davies (Brisbane), either A. J. Caswell (Dalwon, Canungra) or R. V. D. Cox (Glengariffe, Maleney), dairy cattle: the Agriculture Department Under-Secretary (Mr. A. F. Bell), and R.N.A. Seretary (Mr. F. J. Kennedy).

MILK AND CREAM TESTING

The Department of Agriculture and Stock have notified that in future it will issue separate certificates for milk and cream testing, and milk grading and cream grading. The Dairy Officer at Dalby (Mr. E. W. Ladewig) has been advised to this effect also that written examinations in milk and cream testing, milk grading, also cream grading, will be held on July 22, with buttermaking and cheesemaking examinations on July 29. Practical examinations will be held at a later date. The examination centres will.be decided according to the localities where applicants reside. Mr; Ladowig states that the department advises on the best text books available, and literature on subjects covered by the examinations is supplied free by the department.

Far from allowing the koala, or native bear, to be slaughtered for his fur, the Victorian Government protects him, and other native fauna, under its Game Laws. These are rigidly enforced, with the result that “teddy” and his brothers and sisters are still numerous in the Victorian bush. Several bears have made their appearance in Melbourne suburbs recently, and on Tuesday morning a fine fellow was found wandering in a Brighton street. A resident, knowing the danger the little visitor ran of being captured by small boys, or set upon by vicious dogs, placed him in the sanctuary of a gum tree growing in the street. If the bears, which were released by the Brisbane City Council at Mt. Coot-tha propagate, and the Government decides never again to allow an open season for killers, the same experience may

Celebrating 100 years of sugar in Mackay, 1964

Thomas Fitzgerald was appointed government surveyor in Rockhampton in 1862. While surveying the site of Mackay, he was impressed with the potential for growing sugar. He resigned and with John Davidson started sugar plantations. The first cane was planted in 1864 and the Alexandra Mill opened in 1868, producing 230 tons of sugar that year. By 1879 the Mackay district was producing 10,000 tons of sugar per year.

Men's track event at the XII Commonwealth Games, Brisbane, October 1982

There were 39 athletics events held at the QE II Stadium between 3 and 9 Otober 1982. This is the final of the men’s 1500m. The gold went to Steve Cram (England), silver to John Walker (New Zealand) and bronze to Mike Bolt (Kenya).

Matilda kangaroo mascot, Opening Ceremony, XII Commonwealth Games, Brisbane, 30 September 1982

Matilda’s cheeky wink stole the show at the Opening Ceremony of the Brisbane 1982 Commonwealth Games as she entered the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Sports Centre. Matilda now enjoys her retirement at a fuel station at Kybong near Gympie.
