Panorama of completed residences at Inala, August 1962

Queensland State Archives posted a photo:

The tiny township of Serviceton was selected in 1946 by the Serviceton Co-operative Society for development to help meet the shortage of post-war housing. The Society purchased 850 acres of land which was taken over by the Queensland Housing Commission in 1950, to which it added another 200 acres. The area was renamed Inala in 1953 to avoid confusion with the town of Serviceton in South Australia.

Inala was planned as a satellite town of Brisbane and houses were largely Modernist Revival style with elements of Art Deco.

Brisbane town plan report

A “very lengthy report” had been received on the Brisbane City town plan, the Treasurer (Mr. Walsh) told Mr. Kerr (Lib, Sherwood) in Parliament yesterday.

It would be examined in due course and, after study of the submissions, recommendations would be submitted to the Governor-in-Council. It was not customary to table such report in Parliament.

Mr. Kerr had asked whether the report would be made available to members.

INDUSTRIAL SITES DEMAND. Southern firms set up offices and factories

A BIG demand for industrial sites in and around Brisbane has been made in recent weeks by large southern industries and manufacturing firms.

Sydney and Melbourne firms which formerly had only a representative in Brisbane are now setting up branch offices, storage rooms, and, in some cases, factories. Real estate agents reported yesterday that already several sales of
small sites had been made, while other firms had placed orders for suitable sites.

Mr. Alan White, of Ray White Pty Ltd, said yesterday: ‘This is one of the most; remarkable trends in real estate we have seen in Brisbane in recent years.’ Other agents said the demand was mostly for 24 perch or 32-perch sites in the city for branch offices and despatch and show rooms, and for larger blocks of land or buildings in the outer

Commissariat Store, William Street, Brisbane, c 1960

Queensland State Archives posted a photo:

From the Queensland Heritage Register.

The Commissariat Store was constructed of local stone in 1828-9 by Moreton Bay penal settlement convicts as a two-storey provisions store near the Brisbane River and what was to become Queen’s Wharf. A third storey of rendered brick was added in 1913 to accommodate its continuing use as a government store and providing an address to William Street.

In 1860, following the creation of the colony of Queensland, the store was renamed the Colonial Store. It was repaired and the upper floor was converted for use as police barracks. Eighteen new hardwood sash windows were added. Internally, six pine batten doors and a partition were constructed to provide married men’s quarters and single men’s barracks on the first floor. At this time a fireplace, new ironbark shingle roof, wall, window and door were added to the kitchen building in the yard (constructed
