Parliament of Queensland

The Parliament of Queensland is the legislature of Queensland, Australia. According to the state’s constitution, the Parliament consists of the Queen and the Legislative Assembly. It is the only unicameral state parliament in the country. The upper chamber, the Legislative Council, was abolished in 1922. The Legislative Assembly sits in Parliament House in the state capital, Brisbane.

All laws applicable in Queensland are authorised by the Parliament of Queensland, with the exception of specific legislation defined in the Constitution of Australia, criminal law applying under the Australia Act 1896 as well as older laws passed by New South Wales and the United Kingdom because the state was a former colony.

Learns Cooking

(“Teena,” Aramac)

Dear Uncle Peter-
How are you and all the Den kids? It is a long time since I have written. I am learning Domestic Science at school now. As well as cooking, I do sewing. We have Domestic Science on Monday. Tomorrow, we are going to cook jam tarts. I like Domestic Science very much. Aramac has just had some nice rain, and I hear Longreach has, too. I think the rain will do a lot of good. I am enclosing some jokes.

Taking Guesswork Out Of Cooking

The preparation of a series of standard fool-proof recipes for all kinds of dishes is the aim of a group of students at East Sydney Technical College and their instructor, Miss Margaret Beale.

They want to take the guesswork out of cooking; to make it easy for the amateur to follow a recipe blindly and have it come out the way she expects, just to her liking.

The girls are in the third year of the science diploma course in food and nutrition, and are doing “experimental cookery” to learn the “why” of the subtle art.

They take a recipe, systematically vary each ingredient and see what happens. They alter the method of mixing and the oven temperature and note the result.

“And from that we hope to be able to predict accurately just how a dish will turn out in size, texture, tenderness, eating

Home Science Display

A new venture featuring the work of the staff and pupils of Home Science section of the Warwick High School and Technical College will be presented at the Town Hall on Friday, July 21, in the afternoon at 2.30 o’clock and in the evening at 7.20 o’clock.

Tempting dishes of sweets, biscuits and small cakes will be arranged around the hall, while expertly-decorated cakes, finely latticed and also in novelty designs, will be there for all to see. Continuing on a tour of the display tables, which, by the way, are best examined prior to the parade, one will see an enticing array of jams, pickles, and preserves.

An excellent example of the variety of fancy stitches are the needlework samples with their colourful embroidery and hem-stitching. Also in this section will be daintily smocked children’s frocks. A sight to please “my lady’s” eye
