After 30 years of preparing sandwiches and remembering regular customers’ favourite orders, the couple behind Fresh to Go in Fortitude Valley are preparing to retire. Their decision will bring an end to a small business that has remained part of the area’s working-day routine despite changes across the neighbourhood.

The sandwich shop inside the McWhirters building is expected to close on Thursday, 19 November 2026. Its departure will leave regular customers searching for another lunch option after decades of affordable food and familiar service.
Three Decades of Sandwiches in the Valley

Husband-and-wife team He Ming Wang and Li Hua Ma began operating Fresh to Go at Valley Metro station before relocating to McWhirters, where they have spent the past 13 years.
The shop offers made-to-order sandwiches with a choice of bread, meat and salad ingredients. Roast pork and crackling is a particular favourite, regularly selling out before midday.
Affordability has been central to the business’s appeal. A salad sandwich costs $4.40, while a blueberry muffin sells for $2.50. The owners have kept their prices largely unchanged, apart from a modest 20-cent increase last year.
Fresh to Go has built a following without the online promotion common among newer food businesses. Regular customers have instead become familiar with the couple’s service, including their ability to remember individual orders and preferred ingredients.
Early Starts and Long Working Days
The daily routine begins before 5am, when the couple arrive to prepare ingredients. Although service generally finishes around 3pm, the owners still need to purchase ingredients for the following day’s meals.
Their schedule has continued despite changes within McWhirters, where many neighbouring retail spaces have become vacant. Lunchtime queues remain a feature of Fresh to Go, drawing customers into a quieter section of the building.
The owners’ familiarity with regular visitors is another part of the shop’s appeal. Years of preparing sandwiches for the same customers have made individual preferences part of their daily routine, sometimes allowing orders to be prepared with little explanation.
Customers React to the Closure
News of the impending closure has prompted disappointment among customers who have relied on Fresh to Go as an affordable lunch destination.
The announcement also generated discussion in Brisbane’s Reddit community, where commenters reflected on the shop’s popularity and the prospect of finding somewhere else to eat.
One Reddit user pointed to the lengthy lunchtime queues as evidence of the business’s appeal, suggesting that many Valley workers would soon need another regular lunch spot.

Another expressed disappointment about the closure while praising the food and the owners’ decision to maintain low prices. The commenter believed the couple could have increased their prices years earlier but had chosen to keep meals affordable.
Final Weeks at McWhirters

Fresh to Go’s closure will mark the end of a longstanding presence inside McWhirters, where the couple have served customers for more than a decade.
Retirement will bring an end to the early mornings, food preparation, and daily shopping trips that have shaped their working lives. Regular customers, meanwhile, have only a few weeks remaining to visit the shop before its scheduled final day.
