Koala in City Street.
Far from allowing the koala, or native bear, to be slaughtered for his fur, the Victorian Government protects him, and other native fauna, under its Game Laws. These are rigidly enforced, with the result that “teddy” and his brothers and sisters are still numerous in the Victorian bush. Several bears have made their appearance in Melbourne suburbs recently, and on Tuesday morning a fine fellow was found wandering in a Brighton street. A resident, knowing the danger the little visitor ran of being captured by small boys, or set upon by vicious dogs, placed him in the sanctuary of a gum tree growing in the street.
