The Queensland State Emergency Service was founded in 1975. It evolved from the Queensland Civil Defence Organisation which was set up in 1961 to deal with emergencies in the event of a nuclear war. The Civil Defence Organisation was activated in November 1973 following the Brisbane tornado and during the 1974 floods. The Queensland State Emergency Service was established because there was a need for a service that was capable of dealing with natural disasters..
When formed in 1976, the state headquarters was at the former Fortitude Valley Girls and Infants School.
