Led by chef Hao Zhou, Magnolia offers a contemporary take on Chinese cuisine. Chef Hao was born in Shenzhen and raised in Shanghai, where food experiences with his mother sparked his passion for cooking from a young age.
After moving to Brisbane and dedicating himself to mastering Chinese and Western techniques, Chef Hao decided to open Magnolia to share his fresh approach to Chinese flavours.
According to the chef, it was a big risk to go out and challenge the perception of Chinese food. He explains that the regional nuances of Chinese cuisine are relatively untapped in Australia, and he looks forward to showing diners more.
Diners can choose between five, seven, or nine course degustation menus, with dishes often including ingredients like prawn sashimi, Shepherd’s Purse and free-range chicken. Don’t expect the usual takeaway fare – the food here is experimental and modern.
Bookings are essential at this intimate venue, housed in a former chicken shop. Magnolia Modern Chinese is open for dinner from Wednesday to Saturday, and also welcomes BYO wine on Wednesdays.
The restaurant’s website notes that although they have a small yet carefully curated wine list, on Wednesdays diners can bring a special bottle to enjoy with their meal at ‘Brisbane’s most unique modern Chinese restaurant.’
