William Street Transformed into Movie Mayhem for Godzilla x Kong: Supernova

William Street was dramatically transformed into a smouldering London disaster zone, complete with military tanks, debris, and fire trucks, for the ongoing filming of the latest Monsterverse film, Godzilla x Kong: Supernova.

The impressive transformation of the normally busy CBD thoroughfare attracted a steady crowd of onlookers gathering along The Star casino walkway, eager to glimpse the high-octane action. Filming has been underway in the Queensland capital for three days, with explosive scenes playing out directly in front of the casino.

Leading man Dan Stevens, known for his role as Trapper, was seen on set emerging from a fire truck amidst the staged chaos. The set featured dozens of extras dressed in military gear, British police cars, and military vehicles, all brought to life with special fire effects.

A Major Production for Queensland

The film, officially titled Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, is the highly anticipated sequel to Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. It was previously known as “Zeus.”

Legendary Pictures is leading the production as part of its continuing partnership with Queensland, a collaboration secured through Screen Queensland’s Production Attraction Strategy. The main base for the film’s production is at Village Roadshow Studios on the Gold Coast.

Australian filmmaker Grant Sputore, known for his work on I Am Mother, is directing this instalment of the Monsterverse. The film boasts a star-studded cast, including Kaitlyn Dever, Jack O’Connell, Alycia Debnam-Carey, Sam Neill, Matthew Modine, Delroy Lindo, and Dan Stevens.

Community Impact and Economic Boost

Arts Minister John-Paul Langbroek expressed that this blockbuster film is a significant win for Queensland’s film sector. He stated that Hollywood has truly arrived in Brisbane, turning inner-city streets into an action-packed backdrop for the big screen.

Minister Langbroek highlighted that this calibre produces thousands of jobs for local Queenslanders each year, which is why the Crisafulli Government strongly supported the industry against past threats. He encouraged residents and visitors to enjoy the unique opportunity of firsthand witnessing a global blockbuster in the making.

The Monsterverse franchise has seen considerable global success, earning over $2.5 billion worldwide across five films and the Apple TV+ series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. The previous entry, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire released in 2024, achieved record-breaking success, becoming the highest-grossing Godzilla film of all time.

Road Closures and Future Release

For community members, William Street will be closed daily from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. until Thursday, 23 May. This allows the production crew to manage the elaborate filming sequences safely. Godzilla x Kong: Supernova will be released in cinemas in March 2027.

Freeman James Henderson Jailed for Causing Grievous Bodily Harm in Bicycle Collision

Former Queensland Reds Academy player Freeman James Henderson has been sentenced to prison time for a bicycle collision on William Street that left a pedestrian with lifelong brain injuries.

Freeman James Henderson collides with the victim

On April 7, 2022, 30-year-old Henderson, was cycling in William St near the intersection with the Victoria Bridge when he struck 42-year-old Hayley Small as she was crossing the road. CCTV footage showed that Henderson was travelling 11km/h over the speed limit and went through a red light, hitting Small as she crossed with a walk signal.

Small, a mother of three from Townsville, was in Brisbane with her children for a football trip. She was thrown 3.8 metres by the impact, knocking her unconscious. Paramedics arrived to find Small with life-threatening head injuries. She was hospitalised for over two months and continues to suffer effects from the traumatic brain injury.

Legal consequences

In the Brisbane District Court on Wednesday, Henderson pleaded guilty to dangerously operating his bicycle causing grievous bodily harm. The prosecution asserted that Henderson’s actions were not a lapse in judgement, evidenced by his driving history of traffic violations.

Judge Vicki Loury sentenced Henderson to two years in jail, suspended after three months. She called Henderson’s cycling reckless and said he failed to keep proper lookout for Small’s safety.

Impact on the victim

In her victim impact statement, Small said the collision changed her life and her family’s. She has permanent medical issues requiring medication and struggles with speech and memory.

Unable to work while hospitalised, she lost her home. Separation from her children during recovery caused distress.

Freeman James Henderson apologised to Small in a letter to the court. He has agreed to pay her $20,000 in compensation.
