Book Loan System Now Covers State
Progress made in extending library facilities to people in the farthest corners of the State – a notable feature being the Country Extension Service, making available 18,000 reference works to country borrowers – highlighted a last-night broadcast from 4KQ by the Minister for Public Instruction (Mr. G. H. Devries).

In the eight years since the Government subsidy of £1 for £1 was introduced £52,000 has been spent on the purchase of books for school libraries, half by the Government and half by the local shool committees. This represents the acquisition of some 130,000 books. Some of the schools have (with Government assistance) purchased up to £500 worth of books. Very few schools spend less than £5 a year.
