Groveley State School opened 9 October 1916, and became Mitchelton State School in 1923. In 1952 a separate Mitchelton State Infants School was established but this school amalgamated with Mitchelton State School from 1986.

The Balonne River was named by Major Thomas Mitchell in 1846 from the Mandandanji word “balun” meaning water or running stream.
